It is appropriate for interviews for recruitment, investigation, sales, negotiations, disciplinary matters, legal and other areas. The techniques will give you the edge, whether you are doing the interviewing or being interviewed.

TIP

     When you meet the people you are interviewing, make a mental note
     of the colour of their eyes. This forces you to look them clearly in the
     eyes for enough time for them to psychologically register that you
     are genuinely interested in them as individuals. They will have a
     much more favourable impression of you.

What should your staff do if they are faced with a gunman demanding money? There are techniques that can be used to help prevent being killed or injured and reducing the psychological effects of the experience. This course helps organisations meet their responsibility to staff who may be exposed to armed holdups.

TIP

     Tell the robber about anything that might alarm or startle him or her.
     If the robber is told in advance of it happening, he or she is less
     likely to panic and start shooting.

If a court finds that the bribery of foreign public officials legislation has been contravened they will very likely consider whether or not the organisation has conducted training in this area in deciding on possible punishments. The training is important to help prevent your organisation ever falling foul of the legislation as well as minimising the impact if it ever does.

TIP

     Ensure that agents transacting on your behalf overseas are aware of
     the key requirements of the legislation, especially where they have
     significant discretions about spending.

If people aren’t aware of the contents of your Code you can’t expect them to follow it. There are two aspects to training, one is to give the staff the information, the other is motivating them to use that information. Training sessions are also valuable in dealing with any resistance to the Code and helping to overcome that resistance.

If you haven’t explained the standards you cannot expect people to comply with them. In addition to explaining the standards it is necessary to deal with any resistance to them and help motivate people to comply. A well facilitated meeting or workshop can produce results that surpass the expectations of all concerned. A poorly facilitated one can result in a complete waste of time for participants and an enormous sense of frustration. Facilitation skills determine the difference between the two.

This very practical workshop gives people the skills they need to facilitate workshops or meetings and enhances the skills of those who already do undertake facilitation activities.

TIP

     If someone is being disruptive in your facilitation session, give the
     group an opportunity to bring the person into line. Generally they will
     seize the opportunity. On the other hand if you take action you risk
     antagonising many in the group.

Many people are expected to manage the risks of fraud and corruption in their areas, but have never been taught how to do so. This course covers the reasons why people perpetrate fraud, what control are effective or ineffective in stopping them how the control system can be improved, how fraud can be detected and what to do when fraud is discovered.

TIP

     When examining documents such as invoices, orders, etc. check if
     they have been folded. If they do not have the folds they may not
     have been received through the mail and may have been put into
     the payments system as part of a staff fraud.

The ability to get the result you want from an interview often comes down to how good you are in the techniques of interviewing or being interviewed. This course covers the theory and especially the practical skills that will increase your effectiveness in interviews. The course covers topics such as the plus one technique for answering questions, asking questions so that you cut off people’s escapes forcing them to tell you the truth, not only reading body language but using both your body language as well as the other person’s, structuring interviews to give you an added advantage, etc.

TIP

     Harassment is not only making suggestive, sexist or racist comments,
     but can also include imitating someone’s accent, repeated questions
     about someone’s personal life, spreading rumours, emailing copies
     of certain news reports, etc.

Undertaking investigations properly helps ensure that all of the evidence is found and preserved, that the evidence becomes admissible in a court of law, that the process is fair to all of those involved, and that the investigator is not sued for breach of personal rights or slander.

This course covers the entire investigation process in a step by step process to help participants acquire the practical skills needed to conduct successful investigations.

TIP

      People often don’t like to admit to themselves that they have
      committed a crime. For example many people will deny having
      stolen cash, but admit to taking it. So think carefully about the
      words you use when asking questions.

There are natural negotiators but most of us learn from our own mistakes. This course helps you avoid those mistakes, building on research and practical techniques to work out what the other team really wants, how they mislead you, how to cope with negotiation techniques aimed at lessening your position, how to find solutions that leave you both better off and overall how to succeed at negotiating.

TIP

     Instead of using the word “but” in answering your opponent, use the
     word “and”. We are so used to “but” being followed by negatives,
     that we often psychologically react to it and do not give adequate
     consideration to what follows.

The message can be enhanced or killed by the way it is presented. Improving one’s presentation skills increases the effectiveness of the communication and the likelihood of your message being seriously considered and accepted. Whether you are presenting to one person or an auditorium full of people this course will help you.

TIP

     Plan at least the first three or four sentences of your presentation
     word for word. People are invariably the most tense at the
     beginning of their presentations. If they can increase their
     confidence about the beginning they relax more and give the
     rest of the presentation with greater confidence and are perceived as
     more authoritative and sincere.

There are often serious criminal and commercial consequences for breaching privacy legislation and privacy principles. This course helps ensure that all people in your organisation dealing with private information know the key issues and how to collect, handle and protect that information.

     We have a tendency to ignore inconsistencies in attitudes or behaviour
     in a particular person and explain it away as insignificant. Often those
     inconsistencies are important in distinguishing between what a person
     really thinks and what they want others to think they think.

Risk management is a key component of modern management yet very few managers and staff are taught how it operates. The result is sometimes risky management rather than risk management. This course covers the theoretical and practical aspects of assessing risk and managing it effectively.

What measures are appropriate to protect yourself, your staff and your organisation’s assets? Which measures are effective and which are a waste of time and effort? This course helps attendees answer these questions and work out what they should do in situations that they may be faced with as part of their work.

     Reduce the desire of crooks to rob you by giving the impression
     that you are not worth robbing, that you are too difficult to rob,
     and that you are too risky to rob. Paying attention to all three
     and not just one of these, will significantly reduce your risk.

Proper investigations also help ensure good industrial relations and sound corporate governance. Investigations of staff misconduct that are poorly undertaken may lead to industrial relations courts throwing out the findings and awarding damages against the organisation, strikes, industrial relations turmoil, courts not accepting the evidence collected.

How you present yourself in court as a witness may be just as important to winning the case as the evidence that you have to support your case. Research has shown that juries and even judges will often pay more attention to the way a witness presents himself or herself in court than to the facts presented. Learn how to present yourself in a way that will impress juries and judges and help you win your case.

TIP

     Barristers often try to make you lose your composure in court, thus
     giving the impression that you are not completely rational or reliable.
     Do not show any anger or lose your temper as judges and juries tend
     to place a significant amount of reliance on emotional displays.
